Stable growth in the furniture trade

September 2022

At the latest since the Corona pandemic, Germans are once again investing more in their homes. Consequently, the furniture trade is booming and can look forward to a slight increase in sales. Consumers in Germany spent an average of 423 euros per capita on furniture in 2021. However, since brick-and-mortar furniture stores had to remain closed from December 2020 to March 2021 in the wake of the lockdown, the trade in furniture purchased online also recorded corresponding growth, according to one of the findings of the current “Furniture 2021” study conducted by EHI on behalf of the Mittelstandsverbund ZGV.

Furniture sales grow

German furniture retailing grew slightly in 2021. For example, furniture sales totaled 35.93 billion euros compared to 35.36 billion euros in 2020. Of this, 72 percent (25.87 billion euros) is attributable to stationary furniture retailers. Compared to the previous year, total sales represent an increase of 1.6 percent. This means that the furniture retail sector is roughly on a par with the retail sector as a whole, which, according to the German Retail Association (Handelsverband Deutschland – HDE), recorded an increase of 1.5 percent.

Online trade booming

Buying furniture over the Internet is becoming increasingly popular. Last year, online retail* of furniture grew from 11.5 percent to 13.1 percent. Whereas furniture in e-commerce generated EUR 4.07 billion in 2020, online sales in 2021 were already EUR 4.72 billion.
