White Paper “Digitization and New Trade”

February 2022

Retail as an intermediary between producer and consumer – this self-image blocks many companies from seeing how digitization in general and e-commerce in particular is attacking their business model. However, new intermediaries such as platforms are not the main challenge, even if the legislation draws particular attention to them. Rather, the traditional roles and functions of trade organizations “en gros et en detail”, wholesale and retail, are dissolving. Digitization is creating what is essentially a new type of trade, which cannot be captured by terms such as “multichannel” or “omnichannel” for as long as old processes are only depicted in digital form.

The bevh’s “Digitalization” white paper follows a different approach. It deconstructs the traditional value chains and shows how new value creation creates a truly “New Trade” at its core. In a dynamic environment in which new business models are created every day and break with traditional processes, the white paper is emerging as a growing knowledge platform. We add articles, revise existing texts and invite everyone to participate in the description of the “new trade” with their own questions, hints, comments and articles.
